How can informal interactions improve your relationship with your colleagues?
The Challenge
Instead of waiting for others to approach you, take the first step in forming a stronger relationship with one of your co-workers. Pick the co-worker you know the least well and invite them to have lunch with you today, or to go for a 10-minute walk when you both need a quick break from work.
Why do this?
Getting along with all different kinds of people is challenging, especially if you don't make an effort to reach out and get to know them. Get to know your co-workers better in a more informal setting. When interactions are limited to purely work-related topics and events, it can be difficult to for someone to feel like they really know you. This can lead to a discomfort that harms your working relationship as well.
By getting to know your colleagues in a more informal setting, you will build a rapport with them that will improve your ability to work well together, even in difficult or tense situations. Over time, your interpersonal skills and relationships will improve, and there will be less conflict in your workplace.
What’s next?
Keep this practice going by focusing on a new person you'd like to get to know better. Make it your goal to have at least three informal interactions (e.g., a coffee break, lunch at the restaurant nearby, a short after-lunch walk) with them over the next two weeks.
