How do you make critical decisions?

Many critical decisions are made when under a deadline or with internal/external pressure. When facing these circumstances, do you become too deliberative and miss potential opportunities? Or do you charge ahead while armed with inadequate information, possibly leading to outcomes that create unintended consequences which could have been avoided with a bit more thoughtfulness? Diagnose your usual decision-making patterns and evaluate the positive and negative outcomes you have experienced in the past. Then think about how you usually handle urgent issues, and write down at least two other approaches you could use in the future.

Why do this?
Amend your decision-making style so that you can be both thoughtful and decisive when under pressure. Seeing every situation as urgent may cause you to micro-manage or communicate harshly and alienate others on your team. However, if you try to gather information from every possible source you may be in danger of putting off a decision until it’s too late to meet your goal.
This task is part of your long-term effort to make effective decisions, even when under stress.
What's next?
Reflect on your decision-making style, and ask for input from one or two colleagues. After you have a balanced picture of your usual approach, decide how you will amend your actions when faced with your next critical decision.
