What is the benefit in understanding the interests and needs of someone with whom you disagree?

Think about a situation—either current or in the recent past—where you and another person disagreed about something. What was the cause of that disagreement? What were the other person’s interests, related to that disagreement? What was important to that person? Was there something they needed which made them feel strongly about the issue?

Why do this?
Understand the interests and needs of those you disagree with. This will help you navigate through the disagreement and build consensus through give and take. Too often, we focus on our own interests and needs and lose sight of the fact that our opponents have needs of their own.
This act is part of your long-term effort to strengthen relationships at work and increase your effectiveness at managing conflict and influencing others. No matter what your role, your ability to work through disagreements and build consensus is key to your success.
What's next?
The next time you observe a disagreement between two people (or are part of a disagreement), try to focus on and understand the interests and needs of each person involved. Talk about these interests and needs directly as you work through the disagreement.
