How can you help others resolve a conflict?

The Challenge

Think of two colleagues--or friends, family members, etc.--who currently have a conflict that they don't seem able to resolve on their own. Bring them together, and ask each of them to explain what's important to them about their position.

Why do this?

Help others to reframe their perspective. Sometimes, people are so focused on WHAT they want that they don't convey WHY they want it. Creative solutions are easier to find when people who disagree about something are able to explain why something is important to them, and listen to what is important to the other person as well.

Being able to mediate a conflict and help the parties involved arrive at a solution is an important leadership skill.

What’s next?

Practice this skill when you find yourself disagreeing with someone. What is important to you about your position? What is important to them? Have a conversation with them about it.
