How can you present a hiring need to your manager?
The Challenge
The next time you identify a need for an additional staff member on your team--either because your team is currently overworked or, better yet, because you've tracked growth trends in your company and identified that you will soon need a new employee to manage a new product, customer base, or territory--prepare your case carefully before bringing it to your manager. Write down the key business indicators that show the relevant growth and describe how that growth impacts your team.
Why do this?
It takes an average of 23.8 days to hire a new staff member, so the sooner you can identify the need for a new hire the better off you'll be. Tracking key business indicators like the number of customers, territories, and products your organization has will give you important insight. (By the way, if you noticed that this challenge is similar to another one you've done, you're right. It is! We developed a series dedicated to monitoring the size of your workforce, and this challenge is part of that series.)
Keeping an eye on your company's growth trends (and knowing what that means for your workforce needs) will allow you to plan comfortably ahead.
What’s next?
Practice presenting your case to a mentor or trusted colleague. Ask them what feedback they have for how you could make your argument stronger.
