How persistent are you when faced with a setback?

The Challenge

Think about a recent idea that you proposed that got very little support. Try to assess why the support you needed was lacking.  Possible reasons could be: it was a bad idea; it had merit but it was too much too soon; you did not win over someone who had the power to block it. Go back to those who did not support the idea to talk with them about what would need to be changed for them to support the idea. (Be sure you are not defensive!)

Why do this?

Persist even in the face of adversity and become more politically savvy by learning how to get the support of key influencers in your organization. The great innovators of our time persisted when they had a good idea, despite repeated rejections. Eliciting support is often a longer process than you would wish. The key is to not give up if the idea truly has merit.

This act is part of your long-term effort to enhance your skills in resilience and political savvy.

What’s next?

Did you change your idea based on the input you received? If so, go back to all the individuals you consulted to get their buy-in. And be sure to thank the ones who helped you see how to persist.
