What is "worldview" anyway?

The Challenge

Think about what most influences the way you view the world right now. Is it your age, gender, race, ethnicity, political affiliation, or some other aspect of your identity? In what ways do you think you see or experience work events a little differently than others because of this factor? Notice how these same factors might be affecting others around you.

Why do this?

Begin to understand how different backgrounds and experiences affect people's perceptions, outlook, values, etc. We all have a unique worldview that was developed based on many factors--factors we didn't necessarily choose. Understanding how these factors impact you and others is the start to appreciating diversity and finding ways it can help your organization.

This act is part of your long-term effort to lead others effectively by understanding and valuing the diversity of your team, leveraging diversity to meet organizational goals, and responding appropriately to the needs and feelings of people in different circumstances than your own.

What’s next?

Consider initiating a conversation about this challenge with a peer. Ask them, "Which of these factors (age, gender, etc.) is currently affecting your worldview the most?"
