What is your role in helping others?

The Challenge

Identify someone who seems to be struggling with something you have experience with, and set up a 30-minute meeting to chat with them and discover whether you can help them improve some aspect of their performance.

Why do this?

Take an active role in the development of others. People won't grow if you don't make it a priority to help them grow. Few people come to work with the intention of doing a bad job. However, an individual will sometimes perform poorly because they haven't been taught how to do a certain task properly, even if that task seems obvious from your perspective.

Without your time, interest, and effort, people won't develop to their full potential. Get it right, and you'll surround yourself with a more effective, efficient, productive, and motivated workforce.

What’s next?

Take on the responsibility for developing an under-performer, even one outside of your team. Begin by giving them a fair and accurate appraisal of their current strengths and weaknesses, and help them to clarify the performance gap.
