How can you apply creative thinking to problem solving?

The Challenge

Think about a problem that faces your team and make a list that answers the question: "How would we NOT solve this problem?" That is, "what approaches to solving the problem would we never consider?" Look at the list after it is completed. Ask yourself, "Is there anything interesting here? Why are these not good solutions and is there a kernel of a good solution in one of these strategies?" This could spark creative thinking.

Why do this?

Try a new way of thinking creatively and solving problems. Creativity involves thinking in different ways than you normally would. Asking the "not" question can open your thinking to new possibilities.

This act is part of your long-term effort to be an effective change agent and manager of change. If you are not naturally "innovative," it can help you learn to be more so.

Consider doing this exercise with your co-workers the next time you are solving a difficult problem together.
